Globalization

Globalization is the worldwide interconnectedness of including but not limited to the cultural, political, financial, and environmental aspects of our society. The positive implications of globalization allows us to experience and have a somewhat part of another country and culture without having to go too far from our own home. For example, foreign foods and products have become easily accessible no matter where you are in the world. Here in Canada, I am able to purchase a product from Europe or Asia. In 2010, my family and I moved to this country from the Philippines. When I left, I realize how much I would miss authentic Filipino cuisine. But, due to the increasing trends in globalization, it has become easier to buy ingredients that we would otherwise only get from our country. Furthermore, the same way that technology helped with globalization, globalization has helped improved technology throughout the world. Technology has become such a big part of our everyday life and because of globalization, we can easily receive live information from every part of the world. However, globalization also has some negative impacts on our world. Focusing on its environmental impact, globalization has allowed us to travel and import and export products that consume a significant amount of fuel and energy. The sudden rise of it has become harmful to our environmental climate. Additionally, the growing cultural diversity had form challenges in strengthening a sense of unique citizenship. Personally, as an immigrant to this very diverse country, I sometimes can’t distinguish myself as either Filipino or Canadian and had felt of not belonging to either one. But because of that experience, I embrace more of what it really means to be a Global Citizen. Globalization, in my view, would continue to evolve. There would be an increase in global connectedness in terms of our economical dimension. In the future, globalization would allow us to better understand different political standards, democracy and human rights. Environmental globalization would provide awareness on the importance of environmental implications of our actions. For example, with the power of globalization, the campaigns of global climate strike has become widespread and broaden climate change awareness throughout the world. Lastly, as our society becomes more diverse, we could potentially find connections within each other and have a better understanding and acceptance of everyone.

Quote Reflection:

“It has been said that arguing against globalization is like arguing against the laws of gravity.” -Kofi Annan

Globalization is part of everything we do in life. Every aspect of our lifestyle is affected or a result of globalization. Just like the laws of gravity, it is a fact here on Earth that would continue to exist.
